Fabric Glows Under Water          Glows in The Dark

Reverse Side Glows in The Dark

Q: What causes our Fabric to glow?
A: The glow is caused by photoluminescence, commonly referred to as Glow-in-the-Dark. They fabric charge quickly and glow much brighter and much longer than the glow-in-the-dark items you may remember having as a child.

Q: How long does it take to charge the Fabric?
A: Charging for 10 or 20 minutes in sunlight would be excellent to produce a strong lasting glow. A half hour in bright fluorescent light would be very good. Even 20 minutes near a 40W incandescent bulb will generate significant glow. However, the higher the Ultra Violet emission of the bulb the better the fabric will glow.

Q: How brightly does the Fabric glow?
A: In intermediate levels of lighting, the fabric takes on a greenish glow color (or a blue glow depending on your purchase) as the glow competes with the light from its surroundings. In dark conditions, the glow has been measured at 1220 mcd/m2 immediately after charging and, after ten minutes, was still 45 times as bright as required by ASTM 2073 for emergency signage.

Q: How long can the glow be seen?
A: To eyes accustomed to the dark, the glow can be seen for several hours or even up to 10 hours after a suitable change. The following table shows the brightness measured in one test at various intervals after a twenty minute charge with direct sunlight:

Note
The average human eye can see a glow down to about 0.0032 mcd/m2. (Some standards measure afterglow time as the time to fade 100 times that level or 0.30 mcd/m2.) The more accustomed the human eye is to dark conditions the better the glow emission will be seen. If someone comes into a dark room from daylight with eyes unaccustomed to dark conditions the glow will not be visible until the eyes adjust to lower light levels.

Q: So what is the best way to charge this fabric?

The glow pigment crystals that are imbedded into the coated side are excited by Ultra Violet Light (U.V.)   So to best charge this fabric you want to charge the "natural side," and likewise the natural side would be the majority of the emission side that you would then best see the glow effect.  Be forewarned that not all light is the same, lights that have "Full Spectrum" will have more (U.V.) and thus, cause a greater excitation and charge to the fabric better than other spectrums of light that have less U.V.

Black lights, or U.V. lamps can and do charge the fabric quite well, and are indeed suitable for charging this fabric.  The recommended charge time is twenty minutes.  Length of glow time should be around 3 hours. It is best to charge this fabric right up until one is to take the stage for best theatrical effects. Likewise it is best to prep the audience with very low light levels so that their eyes are adjusted and are more acute to seeing light in darkness.

Q: How does the after-glow of the Fabric fade?
A: As with all photo luminescent products the fading begins as soon as the source of charging is removed – faster at first then slowing over a long period of time. For a number of hours, this fading is partially offset by a dramatic increase in the sensitivity of the eye to see light.

Q: What is the useful life of the product?
A: The fabric has the normal life span of Nylon, Polypropylene,. The photo luminescent properties, however, should last almost indefinitely. As long as it is Fabric with the coating applied it will glow
